The technology utilizes digital cameras to take photos of each apple, citrus fruits or stone fruit as it rotates within the grading cup and the computer program uses algorithms to grade each fruit. Tree fruits are graded according to weight, color, optical size and quality, including hail damage, black spot, russet, stem punctures, limb rub, sunburn, bird pecks, poor color and a variety of other defects.

WEIGHT SEPARATION

The weight of every single piece of fruit on a cup and roller system can be measured with our built-in weighing system. Measurements within a tiny margin (less than 0.035 ounces) are possible, even at high speeds of up to 14 cups/second. To further ensure accurate measurements, the system automatically corrects the weight by taking into account factors such as temperature differences and dust accumulation throughout the day. This guarantees the most reliable data for the best results!

SIZE SEPARATION

Our state of the art grading technology measures properties of every fruit, for which the contour and stem connection of the product is used. The fruit is rotated under the camera and several images are taken of the fruit, increasing the accuracy of the measurements due to images from multiple angles. Our grading machines measure the diameter, length, curvature and surface area, and also determines defects in shape. 

Our software is fast too; it can measure up to 14 apples per second, with an accuracy of 0.1mm!

COLOR SEPARATION

The color of the fruit is highly representative of the quality and ripeness of the fruit. Using the color module of our technology, you are able to determine the color on which you want to grade the fruit (for example, the percentage of blush on an apple), based on live feedback from the HD cameras. Images from multiple cameras at various angles can be combined in order to view the entire surface. The characteristics of the apple, therefore, are calculated based on as much information as possible. Ultrafine color separations are obtained through our intuitive software that enables operators to quickly create or modify color spectra.

INTERNAL QUALITY DEFECT SORTING

GP Graders internal quality solution utilizes transmittance technology to assess the internal quality of apples. The system’s unique light projection capabilities enables light to pass through the apple while corresponding sensors take up multiple measurements as the apple travels through the sensing area. By capturing and analyzing the spectral data (i.e., frequency and intensity) associated with the light coming out of the apple, the composition can be determined. For example, the frequency and intensity of the light passing through a “bad” apple is different than that of a “good” apple.

The internal quality system detects internal browning, water core and other internal defects. Testing and operating results have proven that our internal quality performance is superior to the competition and performs well on apples regardless of size or variety.

EXTERNAL QUALITY DEFECT SORTING

How many rotten spots does an apple have? What percentage of the apple is rotten – and what is the most rotten spot?

In order to determine some properties of the fruit, the color module alone is not enough. Shape and context are important for determining and distinguishing characteristics such as the crown, stem, molds, bruises and scratches. Our grading technology allows customers to quickly establish “variety specific” grading parameters that provide consistent detection of the most prevalent external defects (i.e., bruises, limb rub, russet, bird peck, sunburn, bitter pit, flecking and punctures). Once the defects are identified, our grading software sorts the apples into various grades (i.e., premium, second, peeler, cull, etc.) based upon threshold values established for defect severity, count or area.
